We are looking at this famous Dalí’s work at the museum holding a phone camera toward a painting to watch Lincoln appear. The transformation is startling. Up close you don’t see Lincoln, from a distance Gala disappears. Working in cramped St. Regis Hotel studio with insufficient space to step back the necessary twenty meters ( about 65 feet away ), Dalí devised a substitute, handing visitors binoculars and asking them to look through the wrong end. The image compressed, Gala’s figure dissolves and Lincoln’s face resolves. That’s how it was done in 1970s !
